Governor McDonnell announces additional board appointments

Governor Bob McDonnell has made additional appointments to his board, including members from Roanoke, Blacksburg, and Martinsville. Here is a press release and full list of appointments from the Governor’s Office:

Freedom First Credit Union introduces “Scoop” to benefit community

scoopFreedom First Credit Union has created an ice cream truck that will give away free ice cream to disadvantaged children at area schools. Here is a press release from Freedom First:

WHAT: Introducing Scoop – an ice cream truck that’s giving away free ice cream throughout the Roanoke and New River valleys. With the start of the school year in Roanoke City, Scoop will initially visit area schools and after-school programs, supporting community development agencies that work with disadvantaged children and families.

Initially, Scoop will visit Greenvale School, West End Center for Youth, Rescue Mission, and Boys and Girls Club, kicking off future ongoing visits to area businesses and community events. Freedom First Credit Union will also be using Twitter and Facebook to update the community of planned visits, and to encourage residents in the Roanoke and New River valleys to suggest fun places for Scoop to visit. Sen. Warner to host Virginia export summit

Senator Mark Warner is holding a conference on exporting for Virginia businesses Sept 13. Here is a press release from Warner’s office:

U.S. Senator Mark R. Warner will host a statewide conference focused on expanding export opportunities for Virginia businesses on Monday, September 13, 2010, in Richmond. Leading federal and state trade officials, including U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gary Locke, are scheduled to participate in the conference, and the meeting will feature a networking hour as well as panel discussions on specific trade and export issues. City to hold public meeting on HUD funds policy

The City of Roanoke is seeking comment on changes to its current HUD policy. The meeting is Sept. 9. Here is a press release from the city:

The public is encouraged to attend a meeting on Thursday, Sept. 9 at 6 p.m. in room 159 of the Noel C. Taylor Municipal Building, 215 Church Ave. S.W., regarding the city’s HUD funds policy. This meeting will provide an opportunity to comment on draft changes to the current HUD funds policy that are being recommended to City Council, including revisions to the current CDBG allocation and targeting percentages, updates to the “three-years-and-out” provision for ongoing programs, and changes in targeted neighborhood areas.

Two professors from Virginia Tech’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences have been recognized for their teaching and research contributions to the agriculture industry. Here is a press release from Tech:

Marcus M. Alley of Blacksburg, Va., and David R. Notter of Blacksburg, Va., received Andy Swiger Land-Grant Awards for their contributions to the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Virginia Tech.

Virginia Tech plans to offer a  Masters degree in Public Health. Here is a press release from the university:

Virginia Tech has launched a new Master of Public Health program as the United States and, in particular, Southwest Virginia and the greater Appalachian region face a critical shortage of trained public health professionals.

The 42-credit professional degree program, which offers concentrations in public health education and infectious disease, integrates and significantly expands public health opportunities at the university. The program is administered through the new Population Health Sciences Department (http://www.mph.vetmed.vt.edu/) in the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine (http://www.vetmed.vt.edu/) and was developed in collaboration with the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine.
