The late Dr. James Judson Booker, III was named as the 2009 Physician of the Year. Here is more information from Wythe County Community Hospital:

Dr. James Judson Booker, III, was posthumously named the Wythe County Community Hospital 2009 Physician of the Year at a recent meeting of the hospital’s board of directors and medical staff.  The award was presented to his wife, MiMi, and daughter and son-in-law Margaret and Tom Sproule.

Dr. Booker received his medical degree from the University of Virginia and completed his residency training at Norfolk General Hospital.  From 1970-1972 he served in the United States Air Force at the USAF Wildwood Dispensary in Kenai, Alaska, attaining the rank of Major.  He started his private practice in family medicine in Wytheville in 1973, at which time he also became a member of the medical staff at WCCH.  Dr. Booker held numerous positions at WCCH including Chief of the Medical Staff and Chairman of the Board of Directors.  “There is not a person more fitting to receive this award than Dr. Booker,” remarked Dr. Tommy Kilgore, current Chief of the Medical Staff.  “Speaking on behalf of the physicians at WCCH, we valued Dr. Booker’s years of hard work, leadership and service at WCCH and miss his presence among us.”
