Mayors for Meals and “Big Wheels” help deliver meals

Meals on Wheels of Lynchburg, community business and political leaders, and Lynchburg Mayor Joan Foster are participating in the 2010 March For Meals campaign. Here is a news release from Meals on Wheels:

Meals on Wheels, Inc. of the Greater Lynchburg Area (MOW) has announced that it will be participating in the national 2010 March For Meals campaign. MOW’s March for Meals events –“Big Wheels Deliver Meals” and “Mayors for Meals” will include company executives and political leaders from the community who will come together for the day to help deliver meals to the local homebound community.

“We are excited about our “March for Meals Events”. We hope to raise awareness of senior hunger in our community,” said Lisa Schafer, executive Director of MOW. “Many people think MOW service is provided only to those who are 60 years of age or older and living on limited income.   That is simply not true.  Our service is based on need – if you are unable to prepare meals for yourself and have no one to do it for you, then you qualify.  Because we are totally supported by the private sector and receive no government funding through the Older Americans Act, our service is neither restricted by age or income.  We are here to help those who need us, whether or not they are able to pay for the service, regardless of their age.”

Lynchburg Mayor, Joan Foster, a long time supporter of the program who will be delivering meals once again, says “Not only does a Meals on Wheels food delivery provide nourishment for the body; the kind manner and caring attitude of each of the volunteers conveys to the meal recipient that they are important and that someone actually cares about them.   Indeed, no one in this community should ever go hungry—physically or socially.”

The March 24th event will be the third time that leaders from the community will have participated in delivering meals.

Those who have committed to help Mayor Foster deliver meals are:

  • Vice Mayor Bert Dodson
  • Yuille Holt — III of Campbell Insurance
  • Biff Bowen — Bowen Jewelry
  • Joe Zwetolitz — AREVA
  • Parks Snead —  Chief of Police
  • Brad Ferguson – Fire Chief
  • Brian Baker – Ford Mays Wealth Management
  • Dr. Paul McKendrick – City School Superintendent
  • Dawn Metz and Troy McHenry – Genworth
  • Tom Pettyjohn – Davidson and Garrard, Inc.
