Volvo Trucks North America in Pulaski County will recall 270 former employees back to work next month because of increasing orders for new trucks.

Covington paper mill union approves contract with MeadWestvaco

The union’s president described as “bittersweet” the ratification by members of the latest labor contract negotiated with MeadWestvaco by the Covington Paperworkers Union Local 675.

Furniture jobs announced for Henry County

Kimball Hospitality Inc., an Indiana-based manufacturer of furniture for hotels, institutions and offices, says it will open a plant in Henry County that will create 67 jobs.

Régitex USA brings 60 new jobs to Southern Virginia

Régitex USA LLC is opening a textile manufacturing plant in Mecklenburg County, creating 60 new jobs. Here is a press release from the Governor’s Office:

Governor Bob McDonnell today announced that Régitex USA LLC, a manufacturer of made-to-order ring spun and open end yarns, will invest $1.5 million to open a manufacturing operation in Mecklenburg County. The company will acquire and upgrade an existing textile plant, creating 60 new jobs.

Speaking about today’s announcement, Governor McDonnell commented, “Southern Virginia has a history rich in textile manufacturing companies. Despite the fact that in recent years the general industry has taken a hit, companies like Régitex have brought textiles to a new level of quality and innovation. The company will be able to upgrade an existing textile plant in Mecklenburg County to produce leading-edge yarns for the industrial, apparel, high-performance and home furnishing markets. I welcome this international company to Virginia and look forward to Régitex USA’s success.” Read more »

Retired Hooker Furniture CEO dies at 89

Clyde Hooker Jr., for years a top executive of Hooker Furniture Corp. in Martinsville and a celebrated leader of the furniture manufacturing industry, died Monday night at his home in Henry County.

He was 89 years old and had been battling cancer in recent years.

Governor McDonnell tours Synchrony

TMEIC GE receives anti-terrorist certification

TMEIC GE, a joint venture between Toshiba, Mitsubishi Electric, and General Electric, has received a Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism certification. Here is a press release from the company:

TMEIC GE announces it has received certification through the Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism (C-tPAT), a voluntary partnership between U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and the private business sector to improve international supply chain and U.S. border security.

CBP offers benefits to certified C-TPAT members such as priority processing for CBP inspections and reduced number of CBP inspections for less border delay times. Read more »

Evatran brings 84 new jobs to Wythe County

Governor McDonnell has announced that an electric vehicle supply manufacturer is coming to Wytheville, creating 84 new jobs. Here is a press release from the Governor’s office:

Governor Bob McDonnell today announced that Evatran LLC, a subsidiary of MTC Transformers and the manufacturer of the world’s first “hands-free” electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE), will invest $3.5 million in a new facility in Wytheville in Wythe County that will manufacture Plugless Power™ charging technology for electric vehicles. The project will create 84 new jobs. Lieutenant Governor Bill Bolling joined company officials, business and government leaders today on the Governor’s behalf to announce the project. Virginia successfully competed against North Carolina and Ohio for the project.

MTC Transformers, a manufacturer of specialized electrical transformers focusing on niche market segments, was founded in Wytheville in 1985. The company started Evatran in April 2009. Evatran officially will separate from MTC Transformers in July 2010. Read more »
