Governor McDonnell announces additional board appointments

Governor Bob McDonnell has made additional appointments to his board, including members from Roanoke, Blacksburg, and Martinsville. Here is a press release and full list of appointments from the Governor’s Office:

Governor Bob McDonnell today announced an additional appointment to his administration under the Public Safety secretariat.  McDonnell also announced appointments to 17 other Virginia boards and commissions.

Two professors from Virginia Tech’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences have been recognized for their teaching and research contributions to the agriculture industry. Here is a press release from Tech:

Marcus M. Alley of Blacksburg, Va., and David R. Notter of Blacksburg, Va., received Andy Swiger Land-Grant Awards for their contributions to the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Virginia Tech.

Established to reward creative achievement and commitment to the college, the award recognizes faculty members whose accomplishments in teaching, research, or Extension greatly benefit the agriculture industry and improve the quality of life for Virginians. Read more »

VCCS Chancellor to hold town hall meeting at CVCC

The Chancellor of the Virginia Community College System is holding a town hall meeting at Central Virginia Community College next Wednesday. Here is a press release from CVCC:

Glenn DuBois, Chancellor of the Virginia Community College System (VCCS), will hold a Chancellor’s Town Hall Meeting at Central Virginia Community College from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, September 8. The meeting will be held in the multipurpose room of Merritt Hall, rooms 5122-25.

The event is one of a series of town hall meetings held around the state to discuss the work of the VCCS reengineering task force. Entitled “Change Agenda with a Student-first Focus,” the draft of ideas and accompanying discussion will help to shape the future agenda of Virginia’s community colleges.

Centra recognizes Callicott for promoting academy of medicine

Dr. Joseph Callicott Jr. has received this years Barney Award from Centra. Here is a press release from Centra:

A large group of physicians, spouses and hospital staff attended the Central Virginia Medical Community Reception, at which the twelfth annual Barney Award was presented to Dr. Joseph H. Callicott Jr. This award presented by the Lynchburg Academy of Medicine is given in honor of Dr. William Barney. The award recognizes a member physician who has worked to promote the academy of medicine.  As a pathologist with the now Centra, Dr. Callicott worked tirelessly to provide superb laboratory and pathology services in Lynchburg. As President of the Lynchburg Academy of Medicine he worked to organize a society which would benefit both patient care and the medical providers who offer the care. Read more »

Lynchburg cardiologist receives award for clinical excellence

Thomas Nygaard, MD, received the annual John Bell Memorial Clinical Excellence Award at the Central Virginia Medical Community Reception held on Wednesday, September 1.  This award honors Centra physicians or employees for their outstanding contribution to the furtherance and improvement of clinical care for patients.

Nygaard, a cardiologist at The Cardiovascular Group of the Stroobants Heart Center, has been practicing medicine in Lynchburg for 27 years and has been a leader in the development and expansion of cardiovascular services for our region. Read more »

Engineering professor Thurmon Lockhart has been chosen to serve on a National Institutes of Health review board. Here is a press release from Tech:

Thurmon Lockhart, an associate professor with the College of Engineering at Virginia Tech’s Grado Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering (http://www.ise.vt.edu/main/index.php), has been invited to serve a five-year term on the Center for Scientific Review’s Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation Sciences Study Section at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Engineering professor Janis Terpenny has been appointed as program director of the National Science Foundation. Here is a press release from Tech:

Janis Terpenny (http://www.me.vt.edu/people/faculty/terpenny.html), professor of engineering education (http://www.enge.vt.edu/) and mechanical engineering (http://www.me.vt.edu/) in the Virginia Tech College of Engineering, has been appointed as a program director for the National Science Foundation.

Beginning Aug. 30, Terpenny will serve as program director for the Division of Undergraduate Education, Directorate for Education and Human Resources at the National Science Foundation (http://www.nsf.gov/). She will work in programs advocating science, technology, engineering and math; as well as cyber service programs. Read more »

Virginia Tech business professor Janine Hiller has been named a Fulbright Scholar and Distinguished Chair. Here is a press release from Tech:

Virginia Tech Board of Visitors supports expanded partnership with Carilion

Virginia Tech’s Board of Visitors held a meeting yesterday. Here is a press release from Tech about what they discussed:

At their regularly scheduled meeting today, Virginia Tech’s Board of Visitors approved a resolution that would authorize the university to create a new Health Science Division that would support increased collaborative efforts between the university and Carilion Clinic. The expanded partnership will further support Virginia Tech’s growing research foundation focused on the life sciences. Virginia Tech President Charles W. Steger told the board that the university must accelerate its growth of life sciences research in order to meet or exceed the $540 million Fiscal Year 2012 research target in the strategic plan.
