Software developed at Virginia Tech how has an open source license. Here is a press release from the university:

ITT awarded contract to build imaging system for GeoEye-2

ITT Corporation has been awarded a contract from Lockheed Martin to build the imaging system for its next imaging satellite, GeoEye-2. Here is a press release from ITT:

ITT Corporation (NYSE:ITT) announced today that it has received a contract from Lockheed Martin Space Systems, a major operating unit of Lockheed Martin Corporation, to continue building the imaging system for GeoEye’s next-generation Earth-imaging satellite, GeoEye-2. The GeoEye-2 imaging system consists of the camera and sensor subsystem, optical telescope unit and outer barrel assembly. ITT has been working on long-lead items for GeoEye-2 since October 2007, under a separate contract directly with GeoEye. Read more »

Geospatial training program comes to Virginia Western

A new geospatial extension program that will train students in geographical information systems (GIS) and other technologies is coming to the state’s community college system. Here is a press release from Virginia Western Community College in Roanoke:

The Virginia Geospatial Extension Program, based in Virginia Tech’s College of Natural Resources and Environment, has teamed with Virginia Western Community College, the Virginia Community College System (VCCS) and the Virginia Space Grant Consortium to develop a geospatial web portal that will help train the future generation of geospatial technicians in Virginia.

Geospatial technology is a broad term referring to geographical information systems (GIS), global positioning systems (GPS), and remote sensing, and the emerging technologies and applications that support the collection, analysis, and interpretation of spatial data. This rapidly growing field, however, is limited by the number of trained geospatial technicians. Read more »

SiteVision chosen by International Mission Board to redeploy website

SiteVision is redesigning the International Mission Board’s website. Here is a press release from SiteVision:

The International Mission Board (IMB), an entity of the Southern Baptist Convention has selected SiteVision to implement a comprehensive redesign of their online storefront. As an entity of the SBC claiming more than 40,000 churches and nearly 16 million members, The IMB supports nearly 5,000 missionaries in 153 different countries. Their online web store is key to providing support and inspirational materials to its missions, members and the general public.  SiteVision will be responsible for redeployed design, programming, development, configuration, testing and deployment of the storefront. Microsoft data center to locate in Mecklenburg County

Microsoft Corp. will invest up to $499 million and create 50 new jobs at a data center in Mecklenburg County.

In making the announcement Friday, Gov. Bob McDonnell called it the largest economic investment in Southern Virginia history.

It’s possible that Mecklenburg County beat out Montgomery County for the center.

Earlier this year, Montgomery County officials confirmed that a company was considering a large data center project for the Falling Branch Corporate Park in Christiansburg.

Region 2000 SBDC announces “Funding your Tech Development” workshop

The Region 2000 Small Business Development Center is holding a workshop on grants, venture capital and investments for technology innovators. Here is a press release from the SBDC:

The Region 2000 Small Business Development Center, Technology Council, and the Center for Advanced Engineering & Research will sponsor a CIT session on “Funding your Tech Development:  Intro to SBIR Grants and Venture Capital”.  The workshop will provide information on federal small business innovation and technology transfer grants, venture capital, private and angel investments.  This is a FREE workshop, but advance online registration is requested due to space constraints.  The workshop will be held on Thursday, September 30, from 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM at the Business Development Centre, 147 Mill Ridge Road, Lynchburg.  Registration and more information at www.cit.org/events.  Please call the Region 2000 SBDC at (434) 582-6170 if you have questions.

Broadband Advisory Council to meet at CVCC

The Broadband Advisory Council, which is investigating the expansion of broadband in the state, is meeting at Central Virginia Community College this month. Here is a press release from the college:

The Governor’s Broadband Advisory Council will meet at Central Virginia Community College, August 24, at 10 a.m. in room 5124 of Merritt Hall.

The agenda will include FOIA training, election of chair/ vice chair, lunch, and a broadband status briefing. The meeting will be open to public comment.
